Honey, molasses, agave, or any sugar, mixed with butter or oil, brushed onto roasting meats and vegetables adds browning easily for more eye and taste appeal. For even darker color add a little gravy browner to the mix. It comes in a bottle and is found in the grocery store with the gravies. It is made from caramelized onions and carrots, which are high in sugar. Gravy browner is very dark so only use a little. If you use it without the butter, dilute it with water. You can also use light soy sauce to brown foods. It is more reddish brown in color and less concentrated than gravy browner, so it can be applied directly onto anything by brushing or spraying. Just be careful of the added salt.
